I had this email this week “Hi my name is Peter I’m interested in joining your group. Is Tai Chi graded ? . I have done martial arts before but want to do something different. Kind regards Peter” – to which I replied – “Hi Peter, My teachings for members is graded by how much better they feel and how it helps them in daily life by giving improved movement, mobility and reducing pain.
There are lots of classes that have grading systems, which will enable you to have a piece of paper to say how wonderful you are doing, provided you pay the going rate for it of course.
I don’t take any fee .
My grandchildren wrote on the backs of my certificates many years ago.
I used to teach others who had far higher grades than me.
So , please let me know if you are still interested and I’ll send you more info
Best Wishes Alan“
I had my hackles raised recently by someone who was taught at the Lee Family Arts Association, bringing their knowledge to our class. “Instant Expert” springs to mind.
My opinion of associations is the they are a load of cobblers as I’ve seen how they work for the financial benefit of those who set them up.
As I understand it, any clown can form an association, it doesn’t cost anything, but it’s mighty powerful. All that is needed is a constitution, a committee, chair and treasure etc. Plus an AGM.
So I had this idea to “Cock a Snoot” at those who see Tai Chi as a way of making a profit, and IMHO conning people by having grading and the like. It costs a surprising amount to go on a teaching course by the leader at the LFA.
I look upon Tai Chi as a way to help myself and as a way to help others while I’m at it, not for any financial gain.
What do you think? The most difficult bit is finding a suitable name.
Alan
